My first attempt at an AI trailer
I made a trailer for my first book series, Belles & Bullets, and I'm not sure how to feel about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUWyy3Vlrf8
Is it creepy? Is it impressive? Is it both?
The guy at 0:15 is an AI interpretation of Frank Dillane, btw, who was my Francis Doon in that series. It is... eerie. Looks like Frank, but just freaky.
I'm sure AI will improve. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future brings us.

If you are a fan of anybody's work, whether it be art, writing, music, translating, editing, videos, etc- it is incredibly important that you share that you enjoy their work.
It could be a comment, a tag, an anonymous ask saying thank you or something about their most recent piece you enjoy, anything. Creation is more often than not a social thing, and a little note or comment really goes a long way. People are sharing a little piece of themself every day, here on the internet!
So if you don't mind a little challenge, on the next piece of art* you see that you find personally impactful, leave a little tag or comment saying something about how much it means to you.
*this includes writing, music, edits, jokes, anything that has undergone the act of being created by a person

How do I make my images?
I get this question a lot, so here's the short version. I mostly use Midjourney and all its wonderful tools. Externally, I use upscalers and the occasional image editor, as needed.
If interested, I do commissions, drop me a message here: [email protected].

the things which i think are harmful about social media are not specific apps, and short of banning all social media including tumblr (functionally impossible at this juncture), select bans of individual apps are not going to substantially mitigate those harms.
the only way to really deal with the problems of social media is for the culture to develop better discursive antibodies to the kinds of bullshit which spreads on social media--very old forms of bullshit, as a rule, which have diversified a little bit in the new environment, but which are not deeply ontologically different from the kinds of bullshit that led people to do believe stupid nonsense in any other era of human history--and for people to get better at messaging through and around social media. this is essentially the same thing that has had to happen in response to the rise of every form of mass media throughout history, though, and i think it's easy, when confronted by the challenges of a particular form of mass media, to overstate the ways in which this particular form is uniquely toxic or uniquely dangerous.
and fifty or a hundred years on from the introduction of many new forms of media and entertainment, more sober reflection has often lead us to realize that the arch terms in which we framed the dangers of those new forms were wildly overblown, and were as much the product of older generations' small-c conservatism and disdain for anything young people liked as they were for any actual social ills those new forms produced. there are a lot of millennials, on bluesky and elsewhere, who seem to think that they could never turn into grouchy old farts who reflexively disdain anything new that doesn't appeal to them, and i think they are probably incorrect in that assumption.

okay. i need to get this off my chest because i am feeling some very strong emotions about generative ai right now:
if you are using ai because you think your art/writing/music/whatever is bad, you are fundamentally misunderstanding the point of making art.
the reason artists (and when i say that, i do mean all types and mediums, not just visual artists) make art is not just to have a cool thing at the end - all of the satisfaction that comes from art is because of the humanity that goes into it. figuring it out IS the fun part. i'm sure most artists would agree when i say that the most satisfying thing that comes from creating is that moment when you're struggling with a piece and something just... clicks in your mind. you figure it out. that's what feels so good about being an artist!! the fact that you've learned all these minute skills that let you take your hands and body and mind and infuse a tiny piece of your soul into something you care about is so incredible and so powerful when you experience it. and, do note, i'm certainly using lots of flowery words here to get my point across, but it's not even a huge dramatic experience - it's tiny little things that are possible because of what you know and the skills you've gained.
maybe you're a musician and a song you've been working on just doesn't sound right until you adjust that one note and it sounds exactly how you imagined it. a sculptor who realized there was just one little piece of clay you needed to make your bust look like your model. an illustrator who has been struggling to get an emotion across on a character's face adjusting the eyebrow just enough to capture that complex feeling. a writer who finally managed to find the perfect words to describe a heartfelt moment. it's all because of you, the artist, no matter who "you" are.
you could ask some ai model about any of these. i'm sure you could get a few decent results. but, no matter how good that ai is - it could be the best in the world at solving your specific problem - it will never even come CLOSE to how it feels to create something that you care about, something that you put effort and passion into, something with soul.
you may think your art is bad. that's okay. making bad art isn't a crime, it never has been. people seem to think that its better to make nothing instead of making something bad, but you need to be able to make bad art to be able to make something you think is good. if you don't put in the effort to improve your art and instead lean on an unthinking amalgamation of stolen creativity, you'll stay stagnant forever. why not try to get better?
the time will pass anyway.

I realized something last night when, scrolling Youtube for entertainment, I got recommended a penguin video from 13 years ago. Just a guy sitting around observing penguins in the wild. I was kind of struck by how long it has been since I last just watched a nature documentary. Most animals I see today are, like, funny pet videos or passing-bys "storytime" clickbaits with added music and robot voiceovers. I just, genuinely, hadn't seen a nature documentary in years. Or I guess the term would be "given", considering our algorithm-centric web. As a kid, I'd get my hands on every animal show and book I could find. I'd look up animal facts online and ask my parents to go to zoos or museums. I remember getting really mad when the nature channel kept putting up other programming like dog training stories or extreme vet visits. I'd been taught about the concept of TV Reality shows, and the most I got from it at the time was "it's boring shows for adults with made up stories" and, more importantly, it didn't have the wildlife footage I wanted to see. But I guess I got caught up in it, in the end. I only have the subscription page active on youtube, but here I am clicking on whatever looks entertaining to fill in space instead of impatiently waiting for shark week or whatever upcoming channel animal special was announced. New age media content online basically turned into the "popular filler shows" that was getting in the way of my "animal tv" and I stopped choosing what I wanted to watch. It was kind of a sobering discovery. I looked up a bit online, picked up a David Attenborough-narrated nature documentary, and just. Man. At first it felt a little slow and silent until I realized that was always the case, quiet time to let the footage take center stage, before the internet pivoted to creating a whole business around fast-paced, short videos with aggressive audio and quick cuts and automatic skips to keep you stimulated. Took a few minutes of focused watching at first, but then I was engrossed in it for the rest of its hour long runtime. Anyways, here I am doing a huge clear of my youtube subs and carefully picking out a few good documentary channels on specific interests so "watching something" can return to being an active, curated activity again.
